SPECIFIC GOALS
Implementing and Evaluating Spatial
Segregation
Measures
Using Geographic Information Systems (GIS)
Technology
This project was funded by
the National Institute Child Health and Human Development (NICHD) of
National
Institute of Health (NIH) (Grant No. 1 R03 HD38292-01). The specific
goals
of this project were to:
- implement several
traditional
(aspatial) measures of segregation in a GIS environment.
- implement several spatial
measures
of segregation in a GIS environment.
- compare the differences
of results
from the traditional and spatial measures of segregation.
- compare the differences
in scale
sensitivity of the two sets of segregation measures.
Specific outputs from this
project
include:
- several Avenue scripts
which
work within ArcView GIS to calculate several traditional and spatial
measures
of segregation (refer to the Programs
section
of this website).
- several peer-reviewed
papers
published in journals and conference proceedings to discuss the GIS
implementation
process and issues (refer to the Background
and
Literature section of this website).
- several papers (also in
the Background and
Literature
section) to compare the differences of the two sets of measures, with
one specifically
focused on the scale sensitivity issue. This effort is partly funded by
the Russell Sage Foundation (RSF Project #
97-01-02 )
